Abraham Lincoln // American Statesmen [Complete in Two Volumes].

New York: Houghton Mifflin, 1893. First Edition. Hardcover. This set bears a libary ownership bookplate indicating it was a gift from John Murray Forbes [American railroad magnate, merchant, philanthropist and abolitionist...and president of both the Michigan Central railroad and the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad in the 1850s]. The set was given to the Dark Harbor Library (an affluent enclave on an island off the coast of Maine) and they bear the bookplate and very discrete marks supporting that. Dark Harbor occupies about 1/4 of the island and is largely occupied by summer 'cottages', the rest of the island is occupied by largely year-around residents. Owners of the 'cottagers' created the Dark Harbor library, separate from the public library on the island and the cottage families (largely Boston Brahmin) donated books to be shared amongst themselves (there was also, for a period, a fund raised among them for buying new material. Folded map in bound in pocket at rear. A handsome set. Very Good+. Minor shelf/edge wear, light toning at preliminaries, private library ownership bookplate at front pastedown, library label tipped in on rfep (indicating it was never borrowed), else tight, bright, and unmarred. Blue cloth boards, gilt lettering and decorative elements, frontispiece, tissueguards, folding map in back pocket. 12mo [map: 16.5"x21.25"]. 387; 373pp plus adverts. Illus. (b/w plates). Index.
