Stolen and Wanted [Police Dept. Notice/Wanted Poster Scrapbook from the Lewiston, ME PD, 1903 and 1904].

Lewiston, ME: Self-published, 1903-4. Unique. Hardcover. Two police department counterbooks of outstanding 'Stolen and Wanted' announcements (cards, broadsides, and letters). Contents varies from printed and widely circulated "wanted" posters to "Deserters" posts from the US Army to handwritten lists of every watch pawned in a given city and circulated to others for comparison to stolen claims. Police departments of the era would send out both 'official' wanted posters but also more casual notices/requests. The Lewiston, ME PD kept all these in binders as found here. Nearly always lost/destroyed, a genuinely scarce example of 'regional' policing. Good+ to Very Good. Light to moderate shelf/edge wear, cloth exposed where 'pebbled' aspect has worn away, wear at head and tale, title written on the front board of each in yellow ink, ffep free in 1903 (but present) and bears "Lewiston Police Department" in script and the stamp of "Henry A Wing, City Marshal", leaves show even toning, numerous small, closed tears, a few leaves loose at joint, else bright and clean. Quarterbound, faux-leather spine and tips, pebbled cloth boards; brown cloth boards; 1904 with gilt decorative elements; mounted images/cards/broadsides. Small fo. np. Illus. (b/w plates).
