Includes newspaper clippings of archaeological finds in France and beyond of ancient burial and dig sites. Also Pirages catalog listing tag for this volume pasted in. First edition of this important account of Schmidt's excavations in Schwitzerland, mainly finds in the former Roman settlements, the towns of Aventicum (colonized under Vespasian) and Culm. - "Un des meilleurs ouvrages qu'on eut publiés jusqu'alors sur les antiquitees de la Suisse." (Brunet V:210). The works was reprinted in 1771 under a slightly different title. Frédéric-Samuel Schmidt de Rossan, born in Bern in 1737 and died in Frankfurt am Main in 1796, was a Swiss scholar. Admitted to the evangelical ministry in 1761, Schmidt promptly abandoned theology to devote himself to the study of antiquities. Appointed, in 1762, honorary professor of antiquities at Basle, he was, in 1765, summoned to Karlsruhe with the title of director of the margrave's library. He ended up settling in Frankfurt-am-Main where he carried out various diplomatic missions. Very Good+. Full contemporary speckled calf, with 35 plates, Quarto, 4to, 118, [8], pp with errata at rear, foldout plates. With clippings and annotations pasted in on front boards, endpapers, dated 1899-1900.
