Justinus de Historiis Philippicis, et totius Mundi Originibus, Interpretatione et Notis Illustravit Petrus Josephus Cantel e Societate Jesu. Jussu Christianissimi Regis, in Usum Serenissimi Delphini.

Paris: Published by Apud Fredericum Leonard, 1677. [First edition]. Full Calf. Translation to English: Justinus on the Philippian Histories, and on the Origins, Interpretation, and Notes of the Whole World Illustrated by Peter Josephus Cantel of the Society of Jesus. Justin (Latin: Marcus Junianus Justinus Frontinus; [1st] c. second century) was a Latin writer and historian who lived under the Roman Empire. Justin was the author of an epitome of Trogus' expansive Liber Historiarum Philippicarum, or Philippic Histories, a history of the kings of Macedonia, compiled in the time of Augustus. Due to its numerous digressions, this work was retitled by one of its editors, Historia Philippicae et Totius Mundi Origines et Terrae Situs, or Philippic History and Origins of the Entire World and All of its Lands. Justin's preface explains that he aimed to collect the most important and interesting passages of that work, which has since been lost. Very Good+. Moderate scuffing to boards, splitting to head and end cap, loss to upper spine, bumping, toning, evidence of dampstaining, otherwise tight, bright and unmarred. Contemporary full mottled calf with gilt title and decoration, four raised bands, [14 unnumbered pp], 329pp,+index [162 unnumbered pp] Text in Latin, engraved vignettes on tp, dedication pp. ~26cm. Lacking frontispiece. Item #11306
