The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit.
London: Chapman and Hall, 1844. First Edition. Hardcover. Formerly owned by Oliver Sacks. Dickens originally released the story in 20 monthly parts; however, upon realizing its failing popularity, he changed the plot to send the title character, Chuzzlewit, to America. This novel is Dickens at his best, with the character Pecksniff being one of Dicken's most brilliant contributions to English literature.
From the library of Dr. Oliver Sacks, the renowned neurologist, author, and educator. He was, in his life, celebrated for his contributions to the understanding of the human brain and his ability to communicate complex scientific concepts to a broader audience. In doing so, he highlighted the profound impact of neurological disorders on human identity and experience. His library is a reflection of this remarkable polymath's questing mind. Very Good+. Cracked and shaken boards, complete detached front, moderate shelf wear/rubbing to extremities and bumped/chipped corners (head and end cap), foxing throughout, discoloration/browning (plates show moderate toning and spotting), obvious repair to front, else tight, bright, and unmarred. 8vo. viii-xvi, [1] 649pp. illus. (b/w plates). Full dotted calf over boards, gilt title on compartments, black calf label with gilt title on spine, marbled ep, four raised bands (roughed). Bound from the parts with '100£' to engraved title page. 8vo. xvi; 624 pp. [2]. With a total of 40 engraved plates by Phiz, including a frontispiece and decorated title page. With 14 line errata.
