Emma Carola Woerishoffer was born in New York City, the daughter of German-born banker Charles Frederick Woerishoffer and Anna Uhl Woerishoffer. Her grandmother was journalist and philanthropist Anna Ottendorfer. In 1886, her father died, leaving her a large inheritance.
