A Manual of Diseases of the Nervous System Volume I: Diseases of the Spinal Cord and Nerves [Volume 1 only].
Philadelphia, PA: P. Blakiston, Son & Co, 1886. Second Edition [Reprint]. Hardcover. Sir William Richard Gowers FRS (20 March 1845 – 4 May 1915) was a British neurologist, described by Macdonald Critchley in 1949 as "probably the greatest clinical neurologist of all time". He practised at the National Hospital for the Paralysed and Epileptics, Queen Square, London (now the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery) from 1870–1910, ran a consultancy from his home in Queen Anne Street, W1, and lectured at University College Hospital. He published extensively, but is probably best remembered for his two-volume Manual of Diseases of the Nervous System (1886, 1888), affectionately referred to at Queen Square as the Bible of Neurology.
Posthumously designed book plate by a friend of Oliver’s, incorporating his longstanding love of cephalopods. From the library of Dr. Oliver Sacks, the renowned neurologist, author, and educator. He was, in his life, celebrated for his contributions to the understanding of the human brain and his ability to communicate complex scientific concepts to a broader audience. In doing so, he highlighted the profound impact of neurological disorders on human identity and experience. His library is a reflection of this remarkable polymath's questing mind. Very Good+. Cracked hinges, loose half-title, minimal shelfwear, evenly toned, else tight, bright, and unmarred. 8vo. xv, 463pp. illus (b/w). Rebacked green cloth. Ex-library stamps, bookseller. Item #12605
