London: Henry G. Bohn, 1854. First Edition. Hardcover. From Bohn's Scientific Library series. Joseph Ennemoser (15 November 1787–19 September 1854) was a South Tyrolean physician and stubborn late proponent of Franz Mesmer 's theories of animal magnetism. He became known to English readers through Mary Howitt 's translation of his History of Magic (1819, 1844, tr. 1854). Wounter J. Hanegraaf emphasizes Ennemoser's three innovative features: (1) his use of mesmerism/somnambulism as the heuristic “key” for tracing the history of magic, (2) his evolutionist/providentialist vision, and (3) the religionist nature of his approach in general.
The book also explores the role of magic in religion, literature, and art. Ennemoser provides an in-depth analysis of the different types of magic, including natural magic, demonic magic, and ceremonial magic. He also discusses the famous practitioners of magic, such as Paracelsus and Agrippa. Professionally rebacked by Martha Kearsley, Strongarm Bindery, in Portland, ME. Very Good+.
