First Edition. Hardcover. The Testamentum, attributed to Raymond Lull, was probably composed in England around 1330 by an author of Catalan origin and medical training. The work is one of the first alchemical texts to convey the idea of the elixir as a medicine for metals and human bodies, developing theoretical and practical implications already present in Roger Bacon's writings on alchemy and, at the same time, using elements of the Lullian art and motifs from the medical research of Arnold of Villanova. The extremely complex tradition of the text is now reconstructed on the basis of the edition prepared in 1445 by the English canon John Kirkeby (Oxford manuscript, Corpus Christi College, 244), which reports the original Latin, as well as the Catalan version probably by the author, of which the Oxford manuscript is the only known witness. Historical research and research on the language of the Romance version bring into focus the author's physiognomy and the context of the work which, in addition to being the oldest of the pseudo-Lullian alchemical corpus, plays a role of primary importance in the medieval and Renaissance hermetic-alchemical tradition" [Auszug Klappentext].
