Bizarre Collection [10 Issues].
New York: Willie/Bizarre, [1940-late 1960s]. First Printings. Various [Wraps]. Issues 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 11, 13, 22. There is no such issue with 15/16, which was printed as a double issue. In the early 1930s Willie began working for a Sydney-based fetish club as an illustrator and photographer. By the mid-1940s he had moved to NYC (leaving his second wife, Holly Faram, in Australia) and began publishing his renowned bondage and fetish magazine Bizarre (1946-1959). Bizarre routinely published photographs in addition to stories, letters, and illustrations...many of which were of his wife. As a bondage artist, he is best known for his character Sweet Gwendoline, drawn with a clear, anatomically correct style that influenced later artists such as Gene Bilbrew 'ENEG' and Eric Stanton. The other characters in the Gwendoline sagas include U69 (censored to U89 in some editions), a raven-haired dominatrix, and Sir Dystic d'Arcy, the only prominent male character and likely a parody of Willie himself. The Gwendoline comic strip was published by Irving Klaw, who forced Stanton to paint clothes over the whip marks on the originals of "The Missing Princess". In 1961 he developed a brain tumor, burned his archive, and returned to England where he died. Near Fine to Fine. Some light wear, most elements in 'as issued' condition, else tight, bright, and unmarred. 8vo. Var. pag. Illus. (b/w with some color). Item #13943
