Holmes was sent by the Maine Board of Internal Improvements to explore and survey the Aroostook River to determine its suitability for settlement. The work discusses the rivers, lakes, climate, soil, agriculture, geology and roads of the territory and notes a lack of "schools and religious privileges" in the region. It is considered the first work on the Aroostook Territory. Rebinding notwithstanding, a handsome copy of this scarce volume. Very Good+. No DJ. Hint of foxing at text block edges, rebound, else tight, bright and unmarred. Brown cloth boards, gilt lettering, marbled endpages, brown silk ribbon bound in.
