The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood:. of Great Renown, in Nottinghamshire.

New York: Charles Scribners Sons, 1883 [1890]. Second Printing (presumed/very early reprint). Hardcover. Written and illustrated by Pyle, this work altered the course of American book illustration. Pyle emerged, with its publication, as the first great American illustrator and began to define a style and nature that was unique from the controlling British influences. Its publication sparked the birth of the Golden Age of American book illustration. Pyle identified and promoted many other "greats" in the genre. "He was a one-man movement which would exert an incalculable influence on the whole course of illustration." (Illustrators of Children's Books (Vol. 1, page 105). This volume is an extremely scarce and very early reprint in an unusual and possibly variant binding (fitting well with some of the later volumes in the series). Overall, a handsome copy of this seminal classic. Very Good. No DJ. Light shelf/edge wear, hint of toning at spine, small moisture mark at front board, small cleaning spot at rear board, touch of toning at text block edges, else tight, bright and unmarred. Brown cloth boards, gilt lettering, red and black ink decorative elements, brown endpages, frontispiece, tissueguards. Large 8vo. 296pp. Illus. (b/w plates). Item #3874
