Hades in 1847 unpublished manuscript [correspondence] to Francis Andrews March.

Leicester, MA: 1847. Unique. 'Hades in 1847' is a colloquy by Samuel Wheelock Fiske (1828-1864), later author of 'Mr. Dunne Brown's Experience in the Army,' member of the Connecticut 14th Vol Infy, KIA 1864.

This letter is addressed and inscribed to Francis Andrew March (1825-1905), an American philologist and educator, who studied with Noah Webster, and graduated from Amherst in 1845. March taught at Leicester Academy from 1845-47, and later was Professor Emeritus and President of Lafayette College. March's papers reside at Lafayette College.

Apparently Fiske and March were friendly, as Fiske states in the opening of his letter: "Friend March. According to your request I sent you a copy of my horrid colloquy which I wish were at the bottom of the Red Sea before I had the bother of writing it..." Fiske is mainly known for this writing missives of the Civil War, but this manuscript seems to be mythology based and referencing the Labors of Hercules. It seems the tone of the manuscript is a literary dialogue A colloquy in this case, is a term to describe a discussion, generally between church members to discuss the Bible and to theorize on scripture, but could also be secular poetic suggestion. Very Good. One single sheet folded [correspondence], toned yet legible. Handwritten in sepia ink, both sides, deep folds with some separation. Postmark is barely legible. Item #6696
